The six turbines on land at Penny Hill Lane, near Ulley Dam, will generate enough power for 12,000 homes, developer Banks Renewables said.
Councillors approved planning for the wind farm in 2010 despite opposition from residents. They argued it would ruin the skyline and be detrimental to the newly-reinforced dam.
Plans for the 130m high turbines on the wind farm sparked a massive protest from Ulley villagers and residents in surrounding villages, but Rotherham Council approved the planning application.
Penny Hill is Banks’ third major scheme in Yorkshire, following the Marr and Hazlehead wind farms near Doncaster and Barnsley respectively. The facility’s benefit fund will be worth more than £500,000 across its 25-year working life.
